Edition 8: When Your Marketing Feels Pointless, God Feels Silent, and Your Back Feels Tight

There’s a reason to keep going. It’s just not the one Instagram told you.

Hey friends —
Ever feel like you’re doing all the things and nothing’s working?

The posts. The reps. The prayers. The protein.

Welcome to my Tuesday.

But here’s what I’ve been learning lately: just because you can’t see the results doesn’t mean the work isn’t doing something. Some things grow deep before they grow up.

Let’s talk marketing, silence, and back squats.

🧠 Business / Marketing Insight

Why Your Marketing Feels Like It’s Failing (And What It Really Might Be)

Here’s the deal: a lot of people from business owners, and freelancers, to the woman selling homemade dog shampoo on Etsy, feel like their marketing isn’t working. And maybe it’s not.

Or maybe it is, but you’re looking for the wrong signs.

Take a current partner of mine: BusesForSale.com. I wrote a long-form piece that didn’t scream “marketing content.” It was syndicated nationally and ended up triggering a 280%+ spike in organic traffic. Why?

Because it wasn’t desperate. It wasn’t keyword-crazed. It had a spine.

The problem isn’t your content. It’s that you’re comparing it to the content of people shouting louder, buying ads, or gaming algorithms while ignoring their unsubscribes.

Your marketing might not be flashy, but if it’s clear, honest, and consistent, then it’s working. Even when it looks like it’s not.

🙏 Spiritual Reflection

Let’s talk about silence. And by silence, I mean the spiritual kind.

If you’ve ever read the Psalms and thought, “Why is David always whining about God ghosting him?” then you get it.

We like a responsive God. We want quick answers, obvious signs, and goosebumps on cue. But most of the time? God waits.

Not because He’s petty, although I've sure as heck thought that at times, but because He’s after depth. Roots.

Post-COVID, post-chaos, post job losses, post-everything, we’re tired. And the silence from heaven can feel louder than any worship set. But maybe that’s where God’s doing His best work. Underneath.

So if it feels quiet? That might be the moment He’s changing something in you.

Shifting from Performance to Presence

I used to work out for numbers.

Now I work out because my daughter Rylie hands me a leaf and runs away laughing—and I want to be able to chase her without my knees buckling like a folding chair at a Baptist potluck.

But it's not just me. It's you too. You have to understand that the game has changed.

Whether its for your significant other, your spouse, kids or friends, we're not training for the finish line. We're training for presence. For being here. For being able. Not just strong, but available.

The mirror doesn’t get a vote. My family does.

So yeah, I track my workouts. But mostly, I’m watching my mindset.

Because if I’m not strong in here (points to head), I’ll quit out there.

Thanks for reading. If this hit home, forward it to someone who’s over it, under it, or stuck somewhere in between.

Talk soon,

Steve
